In the bullpen that is. By cutting Wayne Franklin, Joe Maddon confirmed that the Rays are going to start the season with no lefty in the bullpen. Also cut yesterday was Tim Corcoran, which I was kind of surprised at – but then I haven’t seen him pitch this spring. Hopefully having no lefty reliever won’t prove to be a problem – its just going to mean that some of the right-handers have got to make sure they can consistantly get out left-handed hitters. It does put the Rays in what I imagine is a pretty unique position though – no lefty relief, but three of them in the starting rotation (Kazmir, Hendrickson and Fossum).
The D-Rays ended up losing 7-5 last night, an improvement from where I had last seen the score – but disappointing never-the-less. It leaves Scott Kazmir with a spring ERA of 9.24, although he says he’s happy with how he’s pitching.
Perhaps more worrying is the fact that the Rays committed 3 more errors, bringing their total to 13 in their last 6 games. With the young pitching staff, the defense has got to make sure it doesn’t give teams any extra baserunners if we’re going to succeed this year.
